Gorham is located in Cumberland County, Maine.  The town contains the smaller villages of Little Falls, North Gorham, South Gorham, West Gorham and White Rock.  Gorham’s village center is referred to as Gorham Village and The Village.   The town is comprised of 50.6 square miles of land, and 0.6 square miles of water. 

Gorham was settled in 1736.  It was originally known as Narragansett Number 7.  It belonged to one of the seven townships granted to the soldiers who fought in the Narragansett War of 1675. 

Gorham is home to the University of Southern Maine at Gorham.  It was founded in 1803 as Gorham Academy, and later became the Western Maine Normal School and then the Gorham State Teachers College.  Gorham is also home to the Baxter House Museum and the Gorham Historical Society and Rail Museum. 

According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Gorham’s population was 14,141.  This included 4,875 households, and 3,529 families.  There were 5,051 homes.
