The seaside community of Kennebunk is located in York County, Maine. It is situated 25 miles south of Portland and 90 miles north of Boston. Kennebunk includes some of Maine’s most beautiful beaches, and is one of New England’s charming fishing villages. It is known worldwide as a travel destination. The name Kennebunk means “long cut bank” and Kennebunk, Maine is the only village in the world with that name. The town of Kennebunk, along with Kennebunkport, Arundel and Cape Porpoise comprise the area known as the “The Kennebunks. Kennebunk is home to many beaches. Its coastline is separated into three large sections: Gooches Beach (also known as Long Beach), Mother’s Beach, and Middle Beach (also known as Long Beach). Kennebunk is home to one of the most photographed gothic revival buildings in the country, the Wedding Cake House. While the house’s façade appears gothic, the house is a federal style brick home. The single family home was build in 1826. Kennebunk is home to the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, the Brickstore Museum, the 1799 Kennebunk Inn, the Blueberry Plains, several beaches, rolling hills, art galleries and historic sea captain's homes. Kennebunk hosts many village walking tours and home tours featuring homes that have been restored to their original period. Kennebunk is also home to many parks. These include Lafayette Park, Lloyd G. Nedeau Memorial Park, Lower Village Park, Parson's Field, Rogers Pond, Rotary Park, Skateboard Park, West Kennebunk Recreation Field, Wiggins Pond, and Wonderbrook Park. Kennebunk and Kennebunkport are part of the Maine School Administrative District 71. Kennebunk is comprised of 35.1 square miles of land and 0.4 square miles of water. According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Kennebunk’s population was 10,476. This included 2,901 families and 4,229 households. The average family size was 2.97, the average household size was 2.44, and there were 4,985 homes.
